The Healing Power of Music
Have you ever been in such emotional distress and you have no idea how to be in your own skin, and cope in that moment?
Where you want the pain to stop and the thoughts to quiet down?
A year ago I went through heartbreak, me and my boyfriend ended a relationship that had lasted 3 years. He was my best friend, and the way It ended, in a big messy fight, and a few bad events that triggered it, left me heartbroken for months.
I remember not being able to sleep or eat and I just wanted the pain inside to numb down, I talked to a few friends of mine, and talking about it helped a little, but what got me through the constant pain I was feeling every day, was music.
Five finger death punch on Spotify super loud, and singing along to it, took some of the pain inside away. Something that nothing else I tried, managed to do.
I think back to other times where I’ve been In a state of emotional pain, and every time music has helped me get through the day.
Why is it that its so healing to listen to music, and to sing along to it?
Well I goggled it and here is what I came up with
According to science singing is a natural antidepressant, it releases endorphins and stimulate the release of oxytocin.
Oxytocin has been found to alleviate stress and anxiety, and endorphins relieves pain, and can create a feeling of euphoria.
Music has the same affect as singing and is according to science a good tool to deal with depression.
Other affects music can have on the brain is that it can improve your memory, relieve stress, improve exercise.
Have you ever listened to a song from your past, and then suddenly remember details you forgot about that time?
I love those moments when you listen to, for me it was mambo no 5 and suddenly see myself as a teenager jumping out of bed and start dancing, before school.
Or the song fly on the wings of love, and see myself skating with my high school boyfriend at the time.
I cant imagine a world without music, but I didn’t truly realize until last year how important music was to me, and how much it can help you when you feeling rough. So when I have a rough day I instantly turn to music.
I think singing along is an important part of the healing process too, it can feel a little weird to start doing after you been crying for hours, but once I got over the weirdness of it, it stopped the tears and even made me smile of how silly it must have sounded if it was recorded.
What effects does music have on you ?
